This week has been a rollercoaster of emotions for many! I empathize with my students as I know this has been a difficult transition to "Remote Learning". I know that as hard as teachers are working, learning at home has MANY challenges and can't replicate normal school. Amongst the many challenges, I am proud of what my students have been able to accomplish virtually, and staying connected has helped me stay sane through all of the unknowns.
It is my hope that many students are able to continue expressing their emotions/thoughts and reflections about our world right now. We know the Arts help us work through our fears, worries, hopes, and stresses and they are just as important now as they have ever been. The Arts also help us voice our opinions, ideas and the way we see the world. I encourage all my students to think about what would be meaningful for them at this point in time. Mindfulness art? Activist art? Art with a message? Theraputic Art? Please take a look at some of the options I have posted for this week.
Hi Everyone,
This week on my blog I am sharing a video for students to make their own "clay" or play-doh. The full lesson plan is posted in the K-2 section on the website. This recipe is great for any student to experiment with. Here is the basic recipe I used: Dry Ingredients: 1/2 cup flour 1/4 cup salt Wet Ingredients: 4.5 tablespoons warm water 1 tablespoon vegtable oil *Pour the wet into the dry & kneed together! Remember you might have to make slight adjustments if it is too dry or too wet. Wow! The weather is getting warmer and it starting to feel more like summer. Although we are in week 10 of distance learning it seems like the end is near and school will be coming to an end soon. June is right around the corner!
I hope everyone was able to spend some time outdoors and have a peaceful Memorial Day weekend. Here are some updates to distance learning: G. K-2 Students are working on a "Cereal box Collage". G. 3 Students are tasked with making a "Creative comic" G. 4-5 Students can choose between "Creative Comics" or "Drawing Challenge: What Is In Your Brain? Posted above is a beautiful example of the drawing challenge submitted by Molly in 5th grade. G. 6-8 Students are working on an "Shoe Observation" OR "Drawing Challenge: What Is In Your Brain?" Also posted above is an example of the shoe observation, created digitally by Gianna in Grade 6. Don't forget to check out more artwork in the Pierce Art Virtual Gallery! mrsblackart.weebly.com/pierce-virtual-art-museum.html Hello Everyone, Happy Monday! This month has seemingly gone by both fast & slow. I can't believe it is already May 18th. I miss seeing all my students at school but continue to be impressed by all the hard work I see going on at home and shared with me. This past weekend I enjoyed the sunshine on Saturday (below is a photo of my dog - Chance) and got caught up on some yard and house work. A new week of distance learning means some new Art Challenges! K-2 Tops & Bottoms. This is inspired by the former caldecott winning book "Tops & Bottoms". Use your imagination to create a drawing that shows something "Above AND below" a horizon line. 3-5 Animal Lettering OR Art in Real Life Art in real life originated from J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles. It has become quite popular on social media. Find more directions in the 3-5 tab on my website or take a look at this article, Getty Challenge. Animal lettering is a quick fun challenge that asks you to create letters that have animal characteristics. You can try using the letters of you name or letters that spell out a different word or quote. 6-8 Surrealism Art Challenge OR Art in Real Life Middle school students may also participate in the Getty Challenge or try creating an artwork inspired by Surrealism. More directions are located in the 6-8 tab. Take care and have a great week. -Ms. Black My dog Chance enjoying some sunshine this past weekend!
This week student's are exploring the theme of Humor. Using humor in your artwork can be silly or serious. It can be a way to bring awareness to an issue that is important to you or a way to "make light" of the current situation. Take a look at the slideshow I posted below and think about the way that each of the three artists used humor in their artwork.
Here is an example from Sterling in 7th grade!
Student in K-5 are working on a Shadow Art Challenge and a Found Object Printing lesson. Take a look at both and decide what inspires you this week.
